In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis people were mad. It became clear that Wall Street had been gambling (very profitably) with the mortgages of people who couldn't really afford them. And a small group of people in this industry became insanely rich keeping this casino going. When it all went wrong, the goverment had to step in to bail out the banks and calm markets. That only worked somewhat and a global financial recession followed, with a lot of people losing their jobs.
People were fed up: The Occupy Wall Street movement started in New York and it slowly spread to other major cities in the world. Right until it landed in Amsterdam, where I was studying at the time.
