Chongqing is a city that has developed a lot in recent years, but within China it is not really on the map as much as older and more historical cities nearby. Its neighbor Chengdu, for example, has deep historical ties going back many dynasties. Chongqing did play a big role during World War II, when it served as the wartime capital of China against the Japanese.
Today Chong Qing is transformed into a very modern city with world leading drone and light shows and has a vibrant city center, competing with other modern cities such as Shenzen.
